One point worth being clear about: OCR records outcomes, it does not determine them. The technology reads the cards. It does not choose them.

Almost every live blackjack table uses an eight-deck shoe. Providers differ on how deep they deal before shuffling. Evolution’s standard live blackjack tables are dealt from an eight-deck shoe and shuffled manually after roughly half the shoe has been used. Playtech tables are typically played from eight decks with the shoe changed after about four decks are dealt, though some tables use Shufflemaster dealing shoes instead.

Shuffle depth is the single most important technical detail for anyone thinking about advantage play, and the reason it is set where it is. A shoe cut at 50 percent gives a counter nothing to work with.

Some tables use continuous shuffle machines, which return played cards to the shoe immediately and eliminate the concept of a shoe entirely. Others use automatic shufflers that prepare the next shoe while the current one is in play, reducing downtime.

Where RNG Still Appears in a Live Game

Multiplier products blur the line. In Lightning Blackjack, Quantum Blackjack and similar variants, the card dealing is genuinely live, but the multipliers applied to cards or hands are generated by a certified random number generator. The base game is live. The bonus layer is not. This is disclosed in the game rules and does not affect the fairness of the underlying deal, but players should understand that a game can be simultaneously live and RNG-assisted.

What Happens If You Disconnect Mid-Hand

Your hand continues without you. Most providers apply a default action, generally standing on your current total, and resolve the hand according to the table rules. Winnings are credited to your account whether or not you were connected to see it. If you had pending decisions when the connection dropped, the auto-stand rule usually applies. Check the specific table’s rules panel, since edge cases around splits and doubles vary by provider.

Blackjack Payout: 3 to 2 vs. 6 to 5

This is the biggest single rule difference in blackjack, and it is not close. A natural blackjack paying 3 to 2 returns $15 on a $10 bet. At 6 to 5 it returns $12. That change alone adds roughly 1.4 percent to the house edge, which is larger than the entire edge of a good eight-deck game. Avoid 6 to 5 tables. Nearly all reputable live blackjack tables pay 3 to 2, but always confirm before sitting.

Number of Decks

Live blackjack is almost universally eight decks. More decks slightly favor the house, costing roughly 0.5 percent versus single deck, but since the live format offers essentially no alternative, treat eight decks as the baseline rather than a decision point.

Dealer Stands or Hits on Soft 17

When the dealer holds an ace-six, does the dealer stand or take another card? Standing on soft 17, written S17, favors the player. Hitting soft 17, written H17, adds about 0.22 percent to the house edge. Most live blackjack tables use S17, which is one of the format’s quiet advantages over many Las Vegas Strip tables.

Peek, No-Peek and European No Hole Card

In a peek game, the dealer receives one face-up and one face-down card and checks for blackjack immediately when showing an ace or 10. This protects you from losing doubled or split bets to a dealer blackjack. Evolution’s standard live blackjack uses this American-style deal.

In European no hole card games, the dealer takes only one card initially and draws the second after all players act. If the dealer then makes blackjack, you can lose your additional wagers from doubling and splitting. This adds roughly 0.11 percent to the house edge. Playtech tables commonly do not check for blackjack but still offer insurance on an ace up card.

Doubling Rules

Doubling on any two cards is best. Restricting doubles to hard totals of nine through 11, or to 10 and 11 only, costs the player. Double after split, written DAS, is a meaningful benefit worth about 0.14 percent when available.

Splitting and Re-Splitting

Standard live tables allow splitting any pair. Re-splitting rules vary, and split aces almost always receive exactly one card each with no re-split permitted. A hand of ace plus 10 after splitting aces counts as 21, not blackjack, and pays even money.

Surrender

Late surrender lets you forfeit half your bet and end the hand after seeing the dealer’s up card. It is worth roughly 0.07 percent when available with correct use. It appears on a minority of live tables.

Insurance and Even Money

When the dealer shows an ace, you can bet up to half your original wager that the dealer has blackjack, paying 2 to 1. The house edge on insurance in an eight-deck game is about 7.5 percent. Even money is the same bet in disguise, offered when you hold a blackjack against a dealer ace. Both are bad bets for anyone not counting cards. Decline them.

Variant Rule Trade-Offs

Newer variants buy their features with rule concessions, and understanding the trade is the difference between an informed choice and a bad one.

• Free Bet Blackjack: Free splits and free doubles on qualifying hands, paid for by pushing all bets when the dealer makes 22.
• Power Blackjack: Double, triple and quadruple down available, paid for by removing all nines and 10s from the shoe and pushing on a dealer 22.
• Lightning Blackjack: Random multipliers up to 25x on winning hands, paid for by a mandatory Lightning fee added to every hand.
• Quantum Blackjack: Multiplier cards from a separate deck, paid for by pushing all standing hands when the dealer busts with three cards.
• Buster and progressive tables: Large side bet potential, paid for by side bet house edges many times higher than the base game.

Rule Comparison Table

RTP for blackjack assumes optimal play. This is the crucial caveat that most sites bury. A published 99.28 percent RTP describes what a player using perfect basic strategy on every hand gets back over an infinite sample. Deviate from the chart and your real return drops immediately.

Why Your Real RTP Is Lower

Three things erode the published number. First, strategy error. The average recreational player gives up somewhere between 1 and 2 percent through incorrect decisions, which can triple or quadruple the effective house edge. The traditional format. Seven betting positions, players act in turn from the dealer’s left, and the pace is set by how quickly the slowest player decides. This is the most authentic experience and the most social. The drawback is availability, since popular limit ranges fill up.

Speed Blackjack

Instead of acting in seat order, cards are delivered on a first-to-decide, first-to-receive basis. Players who act quickly get their cards first.
