Live dealer craps is a real craps table in a broadcast studio, filmed by multiple cameras and streamed to your device, where you place bets through a software layer sitting over the video. Why Live Craps Took So Long to Build

Live blackjack, roulette and baccarat all reached the internet more than a decade before craps did. Evolution launched the first live craps table in November 2020, and its chief product officer described the project as complex, saying craps completed the company’s portfolio of games found in a land-based casino.

The obstacle was the shooter. Blackjack has a dealer who deals. Roulette has a dealer who spins. Craps has a player who throws the dice, and that role rotates around the table. There is no way to hand physical dice to someone sitting at home, and letting a dealer throw them creates an obvious problem: every player who loses will believe the house threw the dice to make them lose.

How the Dice Get Thrown

Evolution solved it with a mechanical launcher, sometimes described as a robotic arm. The sequence works like this:

1. The dealer places two dice into the launcher’s cradle.
2. The betting window opens, generally 15 to 20 seconds.
3. Betting closes.
4. The launcher fires the dice toward the far end of the table, where they rebound off the pyramid wall exactly as a shooter’s throw would.
5. Cameras capture the result and the software resolves every open bet.
6. The dealer calls the roll, retrieves the dice and reloads.

Every player watching the stream bets as though they are the shooter. There is no rotating shooter position, no dice passing and no distinction between your roll and someone else’s. The launcher shoots, everyone plays the same roll.

The practical effect is that dice control and dice setting, debated endlessly in land-based craps circles, are irrelevant online. You cannot influence a machine’s throw. Anyone selling a dice control system for live online craps is selling something that cannot work by design.

The Dealer’s Real Job

The dealer loads the launcher, calls the roll, provides commentary and answers questions in the chat window. The dealer does not determine outcomes, does not move chips and does not handle payouts, all of which the software does automatically. Evolution dealers assigned to craps receive game-specific training, and in practice they tend to be more instructional than dealers on other live tables, because a meaningful share of online craps players are learning the game.

Evolution built a dedicated craps studio rather than adapting an existing table. The design is a 1920s speakeasy: dark wood paneling, exposed brick, low warm lighting and a dynamic statistics board. The theme is not incidental, since craps in the United States carries a specific historical association with that era.

Why Studio Location Is a Legal Requirement

This is the most important structural fact about regulated live dealer gaming in the United States, and it explains most of the availability gaps in the market. Live dealer games streamed to players in a given state must originate from a studio physically located in and licensed by that state. A New Jersey player cannot legally be dealt to from Latvia.

Every state market therefore requires its own physical studio build, its own regulatory approval and its own staff. Rhode Island

Maine

Maine passed authorizing legislation in early 2026 but has not launched. Everywhere Else

If you are not physically inside one of the states above, regulated online craps is not available to you, even if your state has brick-and-mortar casinos with craps tables. Residency does not matter. Physical location does. A Florida resident can legally play live craps while sitting in a hotel in Atlantic City, and a New Jersey resident cannot play from Florida.

There is one live craps table in the regulated U.S. market, but there are several exclusive craps titles. All of them are RNG games rather than live tables, a distinction operators do not always make clear in their lobbies.

The Point Phase

Once a point is established, the launcher keeps throwing until one of two numbers appears. If the point repeats, pass line bets win and a new come out roll begins. If a 7 appears first, that is a seven out: pass line bets lose, most bets come down and a new come out roll begins.

A point is established on roughly two-thirds of come out rolls, which means most sequences involve multiple throws. That is a meaningful difference from live roulette, where every bet resolves on a single spin. In craps you get more play per wager, and many players stay through full point cycles while adding place bets on 6 and 8 along the way.

Easy Mode and the Tutorial

Evolution built two accessibility features into both versions. Easy Mode replaces the full betting grid with a simplified layout showing only the straightforward bets, which shrinks the betting area but removes the intimidation factor. The built-in interactive tutorial walks through rules and bet types during actual play.

The My Numbers display shows which numbers you are rooting for and the potential payout if each hits, and you can place bets directly from it. Combined with on-screen indication of which bets are currently available, the interface prevents most of the mistakes that make craps intimidating in a physical casino. You cannot place a bet that is not legal at that moment, because the software will not let you.

Craps has more bet types than any other casino game, and the gap between best and worst is enormous. The pass line gives up 1.41%. Any seven gives up 16.67%. Same table, same dice, roughly 12 times the cost.

Line Bets

These are the foundation. The don’t side carries a marginally lower edge because the 12 pushes rather than winning on the come out. Note that the pass line is a contract bet: once a point is established you cannot remove it. Odds Bets

Place 6 and place 8 at 1.52% are the best bets on the table outside the line bets and odds. Big 6 and Big 8 pay even money for the same outcome place bets pay 7 to 6 on, which is why the edge jumps to 9.09%. There is never a reason to take Big 6 or Big 8 when place bets are available.

One-Roll Proposition Bets

Hardway Bets

A hardway wins when the number comes as a pair and loses if it comes any other way or if a 7 rolls first. These are multi-roll bets, not one-roll bets.

This is the most important section on this page for anyone who already knows how to play craps, and almost no competing guide covers it properly.

Evolution advertises a maximum RTP of 99.17% on Craps Live, dropping to roughly 83% to 88% depending on which bets you make. That top figure depends on taking odds behind the line, because the odds bet is the only zero-edge wager available. The more odds you can take, the lower your combined house edge falls.

The problem is that online craps caps odds far below land-based standards. Reporting on Evolution’s live table varies between a 1x and a 2x cap, and it may differ by operator and by state. A typical Las Vegas table offers 3-4-5x, and some offer 10x or more. The difference is not cosmetic:

The gap between 1x and 3-4-5x more than halves your expected loss rate, and it is determined entirely by the game and operator you chose rather than by anything you do at the table.

Two practical takeaways. First, check the odds multiple in the game rules panel before you deposit, because it is never in the marketing copy. Second, if pure math matters more to you than the live experience, the exclusive RNG titles are worth a look. DraftKings Craps allows a more generous odds structure than the Evolution live table, and taking full odds on the don’t pass there produces a combined edge around 0.27%. Craps strategy is simple to state and difficult to follow, because the correct approach is boring and the incorrect approach is exciting.

The Core Approach

Bet the pass line or don’t pass. Take or lay the maximum odds your operator allows. Add place bets on 6 and 8 if you want more action. Stop there.

Those bets carry edges of 1.36% to 1.52% before odds, and taking full odds pulls the combined figure well under 1%. Nothing else on the table comes close. Every dollar you do not put into odds is a dollar working at 1.41% instead of 0%.

The 3-Point Molly

A structured version of the same idea: bet the pass line, take odds when the point is set, then make two come bets with odds behind each. You end up with three numbers working, all at line bet edges, all backed by zero-edge odds. It is the most efficient way to have significant action on the table without touching a high-edge bet.

Practical Table Habits

• Watch a few rounds before betting. Learn the rhythm of the betting window before money is involved.
• Place bets early in the window rather than late. A slow connection can push a late tap past the close.
• Use Easy Mode until the full grid is familiar.
• Stay at the table. Live craps runs on a timer and does not wait for you.
• Remember you do not need to bet every roll. An open pass line bet stays working through the whole point cycle without additional chips.

What Does Not Work

• Dice control and dice setting. Physically impossible against a mechanical launcher.
• Hedging. Backing a pass line bet with any craps on the come out feels like insurance. It is not. The hedge costs more in expected value than the losses it prevents. Every hedge on a craps table increases your total expected loss.
• The Iron Cross. Covering the field plus place 5, 6 and 8 wins on every number except 7, which feels excellent. The blended edge is far worse than a simple pass line bet, because the field is doing the heavy lifting at 5.56%.
• Martingale and other progressions. Doubling after losses does not change the edge on any bet. It converts many small wins into one catastrophic loss, and the table maximum guarantees you eventually hit the wall.
• Chasing hot tables. BetRivers displays the past hour’s payback percentage, and it is interesting to look at, but it has no predictive value. Dice have no memory.

Pace and Exposure

Your total expected loss is the house edge multiplied by the total amount wagered, not the amount deposited.
