The catch with video poker is that it rewards precision. The return figures above assume you make the mathematically correct hold on every hand, bet five coins, and sit down at a full-pay table rather than a short-pay one. Miss those conditions and a 99.5% game can bleed like a slot machine.

Most casino review pages rank operators on the size of their welcome bonus. That is close to useless for a video poker player, because video poker is usually excluded from bonus play or contributes at 10% to 20% of face value. We weighted five things instead:

For the roughly 43 states with no regulated option, the calculus is different. There is no federal law that makes it a crime to place a bet at an offshore casino as an individual. Offshore operators hold licenses from jurisdictions like Curacao, Panama, Anjouan or the Comoros. States With Pending Legislation

New York’s push is the one operators watch most closely, since it would immediately become the largest market in the country and would pressure neighboring states. Virginia advanced two iGaming bills in its 2026 session but failed to reconcile them, and a reenactment clause pushes any realistic launch to 2028 or later. Maryland’s Senate Bill 885 got a committee hearing but missed its deadline. Illinois and Massachusetts have active discussions. Jacks or Better

Deuces Wild

All four 2s are wild. The minimum paying hand is three of a kind. The full-pay version, often called Not So Ugly Ducks, returns 99.73%, the highest of any standard single-line game. Wild cards create far more royal flush opportunities: counting natural and wild royals together, you will see one roughly every 4,909 hands versus one every 40,391 in Jacks or Better. Strategy is substantially harder and depends entirely on how many deuces you hold.

Bonus Poker and Bonus Poker Deluxe

Bonus Poker is Jacks or Better with enhanced four-of-a-kind payouts, returning 99.17% at the standard 8/5 table. Bonus Poker Deluxe simplifies further, paying a flat 80-for-1 on any four of a kind while dropping two pair to even money, returning 99.64% at 9/6. Deluxe is one of the best-returning games most casinos carry and is underplayed.

Double Bonus and Double Double Bonus

Double Bonus pays 160-for-1 on four aces and returns 99.11% at the 10/7 table, but drops two pair to even money, which raises variance. Double Double Bonus adds kicker requirements: four aces with a 2, 3 or 4 kicker pays 400-for-1. The full-pay version returns 98.98%. Double Double Bonus is the most popular game in American casinos and one of the worst choices for a small bankroll, because the return is concentrated in rare hands.

Triple Double Bonus

Four aces with a 2, 3 or 4 kicker pays 800-for-1, the same as a royal flush. The 9/7 version returns 99.58%. In exchange, two pair pays even money and three of a kind pays only 2-for-1. This is a high-variance game that requires a large bankroll and patience.

Joker Poker

Played with a 53-card deck. The joker is wild and the minimum paying hand is a pair of kings. The kings-or-better version returns 99.29% and pays 940-for-1 on a natural royal. It is the most strategically complex mainstream variant, with so many exceptions that even expert players make small errors.

Aces and Faces, All American and Tens or Better

Less common but worth knowing. Aces and Faces pays premiums on quad aces and face cards, typically around 99.26%. All American boosts straights, flushes and straight flushes. Tens or Better lowers the qualifying hand to a pair of tens, usually around 99.14%. Availability varies by provider.

Multi-Hand Video Poker

Triple Play, Five Play, Ten Play, Flip Five and 50-hand and 100-hand formats deal your held cards into multiple simultaneous hands, each drawing from its own deck. The return is identical to the single-hand version. What changes is variance, and it changes dramatically in your favor. Single-hand Jacks or Better has a standard deviation of 4.42. At 10 hands it drops to 1.93, and at 50 hands to 1.52. Playing 10 hands at a nickel is a far smoother ride than one hand at fifty cents for the same total wager.

Ultimate X

IGT’s Ultimate X series applies a 2x to 12x multiplier to your next round whenever you make a winning hand. Ultimate X Double Bonus Poker returns 99.88%, the highest number available at most regulated casinos. The catch is that you must bet 10 coins per hand instead of five to activate multipliers, doubling your cost per round. One practical tip: if you are about to end a session or running low, drop to five coins per hand. You forfeit the next multiplier but stop paying for it.

Progressive Jackpot Video Poker

Game King Video Poker Jackpot and similar titles attach progressive pools to the royal flush or to jackpot tiers. DraftKings has shown mega jackpots above $930,000. Progressives change correct strategy: as the jackpot grows, drawing to royals becomes correct in spots where it otherwise would not be. On some paytables a large enough progressive pushes the game past 100%, though the breakeven point is usually in the thousands of full bets.

How to Read a Pay Table

Video poker is the only casino game that publishes its exact price. The pay table shows the coins returned per coin wagered for each hand, and those numbers fully determine the game’s return. Casinos adjust return by trimming payouts, almost always on the full house and flush, which is why games are named by those two numbers. For Jacks or Better:

The difference between a 9/6 and a 6/5 machine is 4.5 percentage points, which is nine times the house edge of the good version. The games look identical. Only the pay table tells you which one you are at.

Why Betting Max Coins Matters

Almost every video poker game pays 250-for-1 on a royal flush at one through four coins and jumps to 800-for-1 at five coins. That fifth coin buys a disproportionate share of the game’s return. Betting four coins instead of five costs roughly 1.5 percentage points of RTP, which is triple the entire house edge of a full-pay Jacks or Better game.

The correct response is not to bet more than you are comfortable with. It is to drop denomination until five coins fits your budget. Five coins at a nickel is $0.25 per hand and returns 99.54%. One coin at a quarter is also $0.25 per hand and returns about 98.0%. Same cost, materially different game.

Hand Frequencies in 9/6 Jacks or Better

With optimal strategy, you will complete a royal flush roughly once every 40,391 hands. At a typical pace of 600 hands per hour, that is about once every 67 hours of play. Being dealt one outright is far rarer, roughly one in 649,740. The royal accounts for about 2% of the game’s total return, which is why skipping correct royal-draw strategy is expensive even though you almost never hit one. On any given hand you lose your entire bet about 54.5% of the time and break even about 21.5% of the time. Winning hands larger than a push are the minority. Plan your bankroll accordingly.

The Core Principle

Every strategy chart is a ranked list. You scan your five dealt cards, find the highest-ranked holding pattern present, and hold exactly those cards. Nothing else about the hand matters. There is no read, no opponent and no momentum.

9/6 Jacks or Better: Ranked Holds

Stand pat on a royal flush, straight flush, four of a kind or full house. Hold a straight or flush unless it also contains four cards to a royal, in which case break it and draw for the royal. Otherwise, hold the highest item on this list that appears in your hand:

1. Four to a royal flush
2. Three of a kind
3. Four to a straight flush
4. Two pair
5. Pair of jacks or better
6. Three to a royal flush
7. Four to a flush
8. Four to a straight with at least three cards jack or higher
9. Pair of 2s through 10s
10. Four to a straight with one or two cards jack or higher
11. Three to a straight flush with one or two cards jack or higher
12. Four to an outside straight
13. Remaining three-card straight flush draws, excluding two-gappers
14. Two suited royal cards, except ace-10. If dealt two options, keep the lower.
15. Unsuited king, queen and jack

If none of the above applies, discard all five.

Deuces Wild Strategy

Never discard a deuce. It is the most valuable card in the game and there is no hand in which throwing one away is correct. Beyond that, strategy branches on how many deuces you hold. With four deuces, stand pat. With three, hold only the deuces unless you have a wild royal flush or five of a kind. With two, keep all five only for a royal flush, straight flush or five of a kind; hold four of a kind and draw for the fifth; draw to four-card royals and to four-card straight flushes with zero or one gap; otherwise keep only the two deuces.

With one deuce, stand pat on a full house, straight flush, five of a kind or royal flush, and hold a straight or flush unless it contains four to a royal. Then work down: four of a kind, four to a straight flush with no or one gap, three of a kind, straight flush draws, three to a royal that includes the ace. The most common Deuces Wild mistake is playing too conservatively. In Jacks or Better you protect made hands. In Deuces Wild the wilds create so many big-hand paths that breaking a made three of a kind to chase a four-card straight flush is often mathematically correct.

Double Double Bonus Strategy

The kicker rules change everything. Hold four aces, 2s, 3s or 4s with a winning kicker. Break a dealt full house that contains trip aces to chase quad aces. Hold a pair of aces above two pair, which is the reverse of Jacks or Better logic, because quad aces with the right kicker pays 400-for-1. Note the trap: two pair pays only even money in Double Double Bonus, versus 2-for-1 in Jacks or Better. That single change removes a large chunk of the frequent small wins that keep a Jacks or Better session alive, and it is why this game demands a much bigger bankroll despite a similar headline return.

Using Strategy Cards and Trainers

One of the real advantages of playing online is that nobody is watching. Keep a strategy card open on your phone or a second monitor. There is no rule against it and no penalty for playing slowly. Free training software is widely available and will flag every incorrect hold, which is the fastest way to internalize a chart.

Common Mistakes That Cost Real Money

• Playing fewer than five coins. Costs about 1.5% of return.
• Not checking the pay table. Costs up to 4.5% on the same-looking game.

Bankroll Management

The standard guideline is a session bankroll of at least 100 times your total per-hand wager, and considerably more for high-variance games like Double Double Bonus or Triple Double Bonus. Choose a denomination where five coins is comfortable, not one where five coins is a stretch. Every regulated casino offers deposit, loss and time limits in account settings. Set them before you play, not after a bad session.

Why Video Poker Is Usually Excluded

Bonus math is built around house edge. A slot returning 94% gives the casino six cents per dollar wagered, which comfortably funds a bonus. A video poker machine returning 99.5% gives the casino half a cent. Offering a matched bonus that clears on video poker at full weight would hand players a positive-expectation play, so casinos either exclude it or discount its contribution.

Typical Contribution Rates

Red Flags

All gambling winnings are taxable income under federal law and must be reported whether or not you receive a form. Two things changed for the 2026 tax year and both matter to video poker players.

The W-2G Threshold Rose to $2,000

The reporting threshold for slot machine wins, which includes video poker, rose from $1,200 to $2,000 beginning in 2026, and it now indexes for inflation. The $1,200 figure had been unchanged since 1977. Practically, this means fewer hand-pay interruptions. Note that some states still require a machine lock at $1,200 under their own tax rules even though the win is no longer federally reported. For a video poker player, the number that matters is the royal flush:

Loss Deductions Are Now Capped at 90%

This is the more consequential change and it is bad news for high-volume players. Beginning with the 2026 tax year, Section 70114 of the One Big Beautiful Bill limits the deduction for wagering losses to 90% of those losses. Previously you could deduct losses up to the full amount of your winnings.

The effect is phantom income. If you win $100,000 and lose $100,000 in the same year, breaking exactly even, you can now deduct only $90,000 and owe federal tax on $10,000 you never kept. For a video poker player putting serious volume through high-RTP machines, gross wins and gross losses are both enormous relative to net result, which makes this cap disproportionately painful.

Additional points: losses remain an itemized deduction on Schedule A, so standard-deduction filers get no offset at all.
