CHICAGO – The Chicago White Sox and Houston Astros each carry two-game AL leads into Wednesday, Chicago over the Cleveland Guardians in the Central and Houston over the Texas Rangers in the West. With under three weeks to play, they are the two tightest division races left in baseball.
Two Divisions, The Same Two-Game Gap
Entering Wednesday, the White Sox are 75-69 and the Guardians 74-72 in the AL Central, a two-game split. In the AL West, the Astros are 74-71 and the Rangers 72-73, an identical margin. The board does not treat the two gaps the same.

The same two-game deficit is not worth the same payout twice. Texas at +390 returns $125 more per $100 than Cleveland at +265, a 125-point spread for identical ground left to make up. The shorter number on the Guardians says the book rates their path past Chicago as the stronger of the two comebacks, and the favorites split the same way, with Houston’s -400 a touch heavier than Chicago’s -350.
Guardians And Rangers Are Also Racing Each Other
A two-game deficit in the standings is not the only number either second-place club is playing. Cleveland holds the American League’s third and final wild-card berth, with the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox safely ahead of it in the first two spots.

That puts Texas in a squeeze from two directions at once: catch Houston in the West, or catch Cleveland for the last wild-card seat, with Toronto sitting between them in that second race. Cleveland is running the same math in reverse, chasing Chicago in the division while trying to hold off Toronto and Texas for the fallback spot it already has. Missing in the Central does not end the Guardians’ season; missing the wild card as well would.
The AL East Isn’t Priced Like A Race
Tampa Bay’s cushion makes the AL East the least competitive of the three American League divisions. The Rays are 86-58, four games clear of the Yankees, and -475 to win the division. That safety carries onto the American League futures board at USA Gambling Sites, where Tampa Bay is the shortest price to win the pennant at +300, an implied 25 percent.
New York sits right behind at +310 despite trailing by four games, its wild-card path treated as almost as live as a division race that isn’t settled.
The rest of the pennant prices read against the standings just as much. Houston is a clear favorite in its own division at -400, yet the Astros sit at +650 to win the American League, longer than a White Sox club that leads its division at +550 and a Red Sox club that does not even lead its own, also +550. Cleveland, alive in two races at once, is still a distant +1500 to finish the job neither one guarantees.
The National League Isn’t Nearly As Tight
Nothing on the other side of the bracket looks like this. Atlanta leads the NL East by four games at 85-60, Milwaukee’s edge over the Chicago Cubs in the NL Central is nine games at 90-56, and the Los Angeles Dodgers hold better than a 10-game cushion in the NL West at 88-57. No National League race is closer than four games.
The White Sox and Guardians play their final head-to-head series of the season Sept. 14-16 in Cleveland, the only remaining meeting between the AL Central’s top two.
