ALBANY, N.Y. – New York mobile sports betting operators won $44.5 million on $380.8 million in wagers in the week ending Aug. 16, a 21.4 percent revenue gain over the prior week on handle that grew 2.1 percent, according to the statewide sports wagering weekly report from the New York State Gaming Commission.
Hold, Not Handle, Drove The Gain
The eight operators reporting handle combined for $380,789,209 in wagers and $44,525,193 in gross gaming revenue, a statewide hold of 11.69 percent. A week earlier the books kept 9.84 percent of $372.9 million, so nearly all of the $7.8 million revenue gain came from outcomes breaking the operators’ way rather than from new betting volume.
Handle has now sat below $400 million for five consecutive weeks, the market’s seasonal floor while baseball carries the calendar. The state’s cut of the week is about $22.7 million under the 51 percent tax New York applies to mobile sports wagering revenue. New York remains the largest of the states with online sports betting, a scale that held even through a summer in which June betting handle hit records nationally while the World Cup thinned hold.
DraftKings Won The Volume, FanDuel Kept The Money
DraftKings posted the week’s top handle at $139.8 million, a 36.7 percent share, against FanDuel’s $128.3 million, per the commission’s per-operator revenue reports. It was the fifth week since late June that DraftKings has led the state in volume, after four straight weeks from June 28 through July 19.
FanDuel still banked more of the money, winning $16.6 million to DraftKings’ $14.9 million by holding 12.91 percent of its handle against DraftKings’ 10.68 percent. The split defines the state’s two-lane race. DraftKings is attracting more wagers, while FanDuel keeps converting a smaller book into more revenue. BetMGM ran the week’s highest hold at 15.22 percent, worth $4 million on just $26.2 million in handle, while Fanatics held third place in volume at $43.6 million.
